{"id":9595,"date":"2026-05-07T12:43:42","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T09:43:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thehighmountains.org\/?p=9595"},"modified":"2026-05-07T13:02:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T10:02:25","slug":"ta-psila-vouna-sto-energy-cities-annual-forum-2026-sto-gkimaraes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thehighmountains.org\/en\/uncategorized\/ta-psila-vouna-sto-energy-cities-annual-forum-2026-sto-gkimaraes\/","title":{"rendered":"The High Mountains at the Energy Cities Annual Forum 2026 in Guimar\u00e3es"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"146\">The High Mountains participated in <a href=\"https:\/\/energy-cities.eu\/annual-forum\/\">Energy Cities Annual Forum 2026<\/a>, which took place in Guimar\u00e3es, Portugal, from 28 to 30 April.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"148\" data-end=\"588\">Our participation took place together with our collaborators from <a href=\"https:\/\/cohabathens.org\/\">CoHab Athens<\/a>, with whom we have already begun exploring models of cooperative and community housing. Our common goal is to understand how such models can be applied and adapted to the needs of mountain and rural areas, where the issue of housing is directly connected to people\u2019s ability to stay, return, and enjoy a good quality of life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"590\" data-end=\"1121\">This year\u2019s Forum was an important European meeting and exchange space around local-level democracy, the just energy transition, energy communities, affordable housing, food resilience, and the role of cities and communities in addressing the climate crisis. Through discussions, presentations, and meetings with organisations from across Europe, we had the opportunity to exchange experiences, ideas, and practices that can also enrich our own work in Greece.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1123\" data-end=\"1500\">The hosting in Guimar\u00e3es carried a particular symbolism, as the city has been named European Green Capital 2026. This distinction recognises its long-standing commitment to sustainability, the climate transition, and the participation of the local community, highlighting the way in which cities can function as fields of social and environmental innovation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1502\" data-end=\"1883\">For The High Mountains, participation in the Forum is directly connected to our work for the revitalisation of mountain communities. The issues discussed (access to housing, energy democracy, the resilience of local food systems, social cohesion, and new forms of cooperation) are at the core of our effort for sustainable and living mountain areas.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1885\" data-end=\"2234\">The experience in Guimar\u00e3es reminded us that the answers to the major challenges of our time cannot be only centralised or technocratic.
